West Virginian County Commission Helps Keep Local Public Service IT Systems Up and Running with Fortinet
Download Case StudyThe Berkeley County Commission is the governing body of Berkeley County, West Virginia. As the county has grown, so has the demand on its IT team, which is also responsible for the network and cybersecurity of local government departments. Serving critical agencies including fire departments, ambulance services, and law enforcement, network availability is a key concern for the commission.
For over six years, the Berkely County Commission has partnered with Fortinet. Today, the commission uses four FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) in its core network and 40 NGFWs in resilient, high-availability pairs at 20 remote locations. The commission also uses FortiEDR endpoint detection and response, FortiAnalyzer for end-to-end visibility, and the FortiGuard Managed Detection and Response (MDR) Service for its security operations. The commission has experienced 100% uptime for its security systems, increased network visibility, and reduced the likelihood of a cyberattack bringing its network down—helping to ensure high-quality delivery of services to its residents.
“We moved onto the Fortinet platform because our legacy firewalls were difficult to manage. We wanted a newer system with a more intuitive user interface but without sacrificing anything in terms of capability. That is when we came across the FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls [NGFWs], which combine power and resilience with an exceptional user experience.”

Improved cybersecurity systems delivered with 100% uptime
Seamless integration with third-party network and security systems
Increased visibility of core network and remote locations
Centralized cloud-based management
A more proactive approach to cybersecurity
A lot of municipalities are struggling with evolved networks that they have never been able to redo from the ground up. When you can go from the complexity that we formerly had to a full redesign with one provider, why wouldn’t you?”
